From colouring to origami, artistic outlets are a great way to break up the daily study session. Art therapy in a variety of formats, that is the ‘creating of an artwork’ without the need for ‘artistic skills’ has been recognised as having a positive effect on the reduction of stress and anxiety levels (Bake et al, 2010, p. 86 & p. 89). Creativity is key to academia in varying aspects. It can give you a unique perspective on an essay or give your mind a rest while allowing the continued growth of intellectual concepts, preventing writer’s block. Creativity is thought to help manage your mental health and well-being and can give you the opportunity to leave behind any unhealthy relationships with studying and get you on a more positive track.
