Read on to find out more about membership.
Types of Membership
A full membership applies to any current student (part time or full time) on a course that leads to a University of Portsmouth award, a student on placement and all Union Sabbatical Officers.
An associate membership applies to Union or University staff, former students (alumni) of a course that led to a University of Portsmouth Award or Students on an approved scheme with an associated institution.
The affiliate membership applies to any student from an institution who has an affiliate agreement with UPSU.
Payment for Membership
If you are a full member, payment for student group membership can be made on the group's individual UPSU page under Student Group A-Z of the Activities heading or at the Student Union Shop. If completing the process online, scroll down the page until you locate the purple 'add to basket' button. Click this and then scroll back to the top of the page and click on the white basket icon in the left-hand corner. Please then follow the steps to complete the process and make sure that when entering your student number you only enter the 6 digits without the 'up' at the beginning and that when you type out your email address you use the following format firstname.lastname@example.org.
However, there is a slight difference in this for associate and affiliate members before payment and registration can be made for a student group membership.
For Union or University staff, former students (alumni) of a course that led to a University of Portsmouth Award or Students on an approved scheme with an associated institution must pay for their membership as the Student Union Shop, and then pay for their student group membership via the shop also. This associate fee is a one-off £45 payment and enables you to join as many student groups as you wish.
Any student from an institution who has an affiliate agreement with UPSU must pay for their membership at the Student Union Shop and then pay for their student group membership using the payment methods outlined at the very top.
If a student group is one that does not require you to pay a membership fee, associate members will still need to pay the £45 registration fee that allows you to become a member of the Union. Affiliate and full members will need to follow the same online registration process even if the student group is free.
